Youth Asset Network (YAN) Definition
A collective network geared towards developing safer and positive youth, communities, connections and relationships through an asset development philosophy.
What is the main project idea?
- ‘Youth Asset Network’ - a Provincial Youth Asset Development project geared to address issues of gang & crime recruitment, child & youth sexual exploitation and broader risks of crime and victimization of youth in partnership with Public and Private Sector stakeholders in each community.
- This is a Provincial level project which supports locally driven projects to address specific community needs.
- A number of key youth stakeholders will work to develop a Provincial template of ideas, activities complete with resources, ideas, concepts, and a sample start-up kit designed to effectively engage Local and Provincial stakeholders in an Asset Development approach to crime prevention and reduction of risk & victimization. This tool will serve as a collaboration unit to educate communities on sample models and other youth resources and information to help assist research, development and project implementation at the local levels. The tool kit will be made available on-line at the BCCPA website August 2007.
YAN project development Guidelines for local communities
- It’s a holistic asset development approach allowing many partners to contribute differently – there is no ‘prescription’.
- It’s about looking at a problem differently: bringing youth into a circle of inclusiveness and building and enhancing their assets to increase their safety, rather than marginalizing them.
- It’s sharing not ownership.
- It’s about multiple perspectives, community engagement, interconnections, big pictures, capacity building, expanding assets, building potential.
- Key elements contribute to influence health, safety, well-being, the positive development of youth, and building community relations.
