When people talk about "counterfeit" the first thing they think of is money, especially paper currency, but in the world of fraud there are many other products that are counterfeited. You will also often hear the phrases "pirated" or "bootlegged" in reference to movies and "knock-offs" when talking about clothing and watches. As with counterfeit currency imitation merchandise is designed to fool the consumer into believing that what he is buying is the genuine article and it may go so far as to steal the manufacturers label to authenticate the product. The counterfeited item is often sold at a fraction of the price of the legitimate article and whilst the consumer may be satisfied with the price the quality of the merchandise is often inferior.
In legal circles the whole issue of copyright infringement and trademark counterfeiting is also known as Intellectual Property Crime.
