Speakers Bureau

As part of its mandate under the Crime Shield program to provide the public with the tools they need to protect themselves from criminal activity and to promote education and awareness, the BC Crime Prevention Association offers workshops, lectures and presentations on the following topics:

Fees

BC Crime Prevention Association is a non-profit body but seeks to offset its operating expenses for presentations and workshops through (a) modest honorariums and (b) mileage reimbursement (under certain circumstances***)

Scale of fees:

  • Police and civilian employees (Crime Prevention Practitioners, Community Policing volunteers)                                                                 FREE
  • Non-profit groups**                                $150
  • Corporate                                                $500

Multiple and/or repeat sessions for conferences would incur a higher honorarium.

** To qualify for the non-profit rate your association must provide BC Crime Prevention Association with proof that you are a registered under the Society Act of BC.

***Mileage reimbursement:
Where the total mileage measured from BC Crime Prevention’s office to the presentation venue and return exceeds 35kms, the excess is charged at 0.45c per kilometer (requestor is invoiced after the event).

A native of Vancouver, Valerie MacLean received her Bachelor of Arts degree from McGill University. Her background is in law enforcement, as a former member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and as a fraud investigator for two Ministries of the Provincial Government.

Most recently, Valerie served as the Vice-President of Consumer Affairs for the Better Business Bureau of Mainland BC, and in this capacity managed the Consumer Affairs department, acted as the spokesperson for the Better Business Bureau for all media and public speaking engagements, was the official liaison with law enforcement agencies, and conducted all the fraud investigations at the Bureau.

Currently, Valerie continues to educate the public about fraud awareness and prevention as the Executive Director of BC Crime Prevention Association.

Jeff Burton retired from the Vancouver Police Department in 2002 following a 30 year career and completed his service as a detective in the Financial Crime Section. He joined the BC Crime Prevention Association later that year and drew upon his knowledge and expertise as a fraud investigator to develop fraud education materials to educate the public.

He is currently the Manager of Programs & Projects and regularly appears on radio and television to speak on frauds & scams and under the Crime Shield banner he offers presentations to the public and business on payment card fraud and crime prevention in general. 

Mr Burton also researches materials for use by BC Hydro Power Pioneers who deliver lectures province-wide on seniors safety and crime prevention.  Under his portfolio he oversees the operation of the Crime Free Multi Housing Program and the seasonal Operation Red Nose Program.
